: Well I understand that it is a Huguenot name - the family fleeing from France/Belgium. As for the custard maker bit - could be true - although my great aunt once told me that there were the 'De Flawn's' (possibly slightly different spelling) who were violin makers - slightly more romantic than making flans. Anyway that's all I know.
