: The name Lovato (originally Lobato) means young wolf or wolf cub in Spanish. The name originates in the Galicia region of Spain. One of Cortez' soldiers in the conquest of Mexico was name Cristobal Lobato. In Spanish the b and v sounds are interchangeable so some people spelled the name with a b others with a v depending usually on how the priest spelled the name on the baptismal records. The first Lovato recorded in New Mexico was Bartolome' who came in about 1693 with the Spanish settlers who resettled New Mexico after the Pueblo Indian revolt of 1680. He had 3 sons two of whom settled in the northern part of the state and one of whom setteled in the souther part.Later many descendants migrated to Colorado and other parts of the country. There was at at one time very large land grant granted in northern NM by the king of Spain to Captain Juan Jose Lobato wThe grant was not later recognized when the Americans took over NM. Other interesting facts about this name :There is a coat of arms registered for the name in Spain which shows a castle surrounded by 7 wolves. Among the Sephardic (Spanish Jew) names Lobato is listed, however this does not imply that all people with this name were Jewish. The great Apache Indian war chief Geronimo's grandmother was a Spanish women named Lovato who was captured by the Apaches who had murdered her husband.
