Subject: Elusive ancestor
Message:
Dear Hank,
I am very new in the game of Genealogy and it is something that I am taking a great interest in.
My mother has been searching for an elusive ancestor (who is her grandfather).
Her mother adamantly refuses to assist her find her roots, and I have joined her
quest to locate him. I will quickly relate some information to you and if you can be of assistance, I would appreciate any advice or information you could share
with me. His name is (apparently) Carl Gustav Grant born about December 1884
in Sweden. This is all we know about his birth. He apparently was a merchant
marine and jumped ship at Bunbury Western Australia in the early 1900's. He went to New South Wales and was naturalized. Eventually he joined the army and served in France, married an Australian woman in England and after the war
settled in Geraldton Western Australia.
The only information we have about his parents is that his fathers name was Carl Gustav Grant who was a Scottish Sea Captain. His father died at sea and his mother (Elizabeth Hyllengrer) who was Swedish died giving birth to him and he was raised in an orphanage for Deceased Sea Officers Sons.
We believe that he could have changed his name as when he jumped ship he
was only one exam from becoming Captain and amazingly enough when he joined the war effort, he joined the army. We cannot find his name or his parents names in any files that we have looked in.
As you can see, we have very little information and a language barrier, and the
disappointment of knowing that some of this information is very incorrect (I call them family lies). Please, if you can assist me, I would be most grateful.
