Nancy Ruth (Phebus) Parks, 81, a former resident of Oxford, Miss., died April 7, 2008, at the home of her daughter, Phoebe (Sorrells) Burks of Memphis. She was also a former resident of Union City and had been making her home with her daughter most recently. Mrs. Parks was the sister of the late James M. Phebus of Union City.
Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Waller Funeral Home in Oxford, with Dr. C. Roy Stauffer officiating. Burial will follow in Oxford Memorial Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home 10-11 a.m. Thursday. The family requests that memorials be made to Rosalie Mansion, P.O. Box 1392, Natchez, MS 39121; First Presbyterian Church, 924 Van Buren St., Oxford, MS 38655; or Friends of the Library, in care of Oxford-Lafayette County Public Library, 401 Bramlett Blvd., Oxford, MS 38655.
She was born Aug. 8, 1926, in Union City, daughter of the late Leonard Rowan and Esther (Moore) Phebus. She was the widow of Dr. James E. Parks and was a member of Oxford First Presbyterian Church. She was a longtime member and past regent of Davis Reese Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution and was a also a member of Friends of the Library and the Cosmopolitan Club. She was also a longtime supporter of Rosalie Mansion in Natchez, Miss. She had been employed in the public works offices in Memphis for the late William Farris and had been very active in campaigns that spanned 40 years. She was also the retired Ole Miss Law School registrar.
Survivors also include her son and daughter-in-law, Charles W. “Pete” Sorrells Jr. and Brenda Sorrells of Las Vegas; her stepdaughter and her husband, Lynn and Dave Russell of Meridian, Miss.; her stepson and his wife, Steve and Marianne Parks of Senatobia, Miss.; five grandchildren and their spouses, David W. and Elizabeth Burks of Memphis, Brian W. and Emily Burks of Collierville, Phillip R. Sorrells and Landry R. Sorrells, both of Las Vegas, and Susan S. and Jay Kettinger of Plano, Texas; and 10 great-grandchildren.
