He took orders from farmers for groceries and delivered them when he returned the empty milk cans. The family would sit under the balcony in the theater to avoid thrown objects from the blacks seated above. The Italians made chock beer in Krebs. Truman went on disability in Boron at age 62. The ground gave way and the truck Truman was driving fell 50 feet. He had to walk with a cane. He received Social Security and a pension from Borax. !BIOGRAPHY: Bill Harrington, personal communication, 19 Feb 1994 Truman had a truck and had gas rations. He always had gas. Pop new how to get it. He hauled hay and cotton whrever he could pick up a haul job before the war. He also picked cotton. In the winters he worked in mines in California. At Bishop he worked at U.S. Vanadium and Black Rock. He sent every check home and lived on his winnings from gambling. At Independence, CA he won a car and drove it back to Oklahoma. It was a 1932 Plymouth with freewheeling. When you put it in freewheel the car would coast. Ava was against Truman's gambling. One Sunday Truman wore a pair of white pants to go to church. A tornado came and Truman hurried his family into the cellar. He could not get the cellar door closed. His pants turned black from the blowing dust. All the windows were blown out of the house from that tornado. Jack Rose was one of Truman's gambling buddies. When the revival shows would come to town, Jack was always up in the front row getting saved. When he wasn't getting saved Jack and Truman and the rest of the guys would walk up into the trees. They would lay a blanket down and play poker for penny, nickel and dime stakes. Everybody in town knew what they were doing. The gun that Kevin has now belonged to Dr. Stewig(sp.?). He gave it to Truman. Truman won an Aladdin lamp in McAlester. The light was very bright. The family thought they were in "hog heaven" when Truman brought home that light. Truman always had money to give to Ava for Sunday school every week. When the priest would come to the house in Boron, Truman would say, "well, who much money do you need today?" During the war, he worked out at the Naval Ammunition base in McAlester. Now the base is operated by the Army but originally it was built by the Navy.
